WHO WE ARE
A community-based organization rooted in Providence
Incorporated in 1992, Jammat (pronounced Jah-Maht) Housing and Community Development Corporation is a community-based, minority-operated nonprofit in Providence. We provide educational and support services including child care, residential care for youth, recreation, education, and community events.
We believe all people have an intrinsic value that can and should be cultivated, so they can become the best persons they can be, whatever historical odds they have faced.
YOUTH AGES 12 TO 21
Turning the Corner
Residential treatment programs for youth placed in our care by the Rhode Island Department of Children, Youth and Families.
EARLY CHILDHOOD
Beautiful Beginnings
A child care center where children learn through play, from infant and toddler rooms through Pre-Kindergarten.
IN THE COMMUNITY
Community Programs
Recreation, education, and community events for families in Providence's West End and beyond.
Built on a legacy of service in the West End
Jammat fulfills the vision of the late Robert W. Lewis, Jr. and Wallace (Wali) Bey, who incorporated the organization. Mr. Lewis served the West End of Providence for more than 25 years as a businessman and a tireless advocate for the underserved. The building that houses Beautiful Beginnings is dedicated in his honor.
Wali Bey started the Youth Alternatives Program and built the links with New England Institute of Technology, Brown University, and local unions that give our young people a path to lasting change.
